Not many people enjoy being on a plane for a long time. Fortunately, there are ways to stay occupied and entertained even on a long flight.

Reading is the classic in-flight time-passer, and even though there are a variety of entertainment options readily available, nothing really beats a great book. Even people who aren’t big readers may find audiobooks a welcome distraction, and this allows them to sit back, relax and close their eyes.

Another form of classic in-flight entertainment is watching a movie, and the days when everyone had to watch the same one on a big screen in the cabin are largely long gone. Today, planes offer a variety of TV shows and films either on the seatback or via an app. However, people may want to download their own films onto laptops or tablets instead. Listening to music is another option. Some people may prefer to play video games.

One advantage of a long flight is that it can provide plenty of time to think, and this means it can be a great opportunity to write in a journal. For people who prefer more structure, this time could be spent thinking about goals and writing up ways to reach them. Even travelers who are offline can draft emails or do other work-related tasks. This is also a good time to firm up any trip plans, reading over guidebooks to find out more about the destination.

Flying can be a great time to get creative. This might mean working on a craft. People should find out ahead of time if any of the tools they use, such as knitting needles or scissors, are prohibited. They could also sketch or work in an adult coloring book.

On most flights, people have a seatmate, and sometimes, chatting with a neighbor can be a pleasant way to pass the time. Self-care is also important. Drinking water and moisturizing in order to combat dehydration, as well as sleeping, can pass the time and help people feel better when they land.

Long flights can present a challenge, but having a list of activities to tackle once in the sky can make them much more bearable.
